Frequently Asked Questions
“What are the benefits of Bikram yoga?”
Bikram scientifically designed this series to deliver total health through the balancing and strengthening of every system in the body in order to prevent illness and injury, promote weight loss, and limit the effects of aging. In addition, the sequence of postures combines skills of concentration, patience, determination and self-control, which increase mental clarity and reduce stress.

A regular yoga practice:
• Builds strength
• Increases joint mobility and range of motion
• Improves circulation
• Boosts the immune system
• Flushes the lymphatic system
• Expands lung capacity and strengthens the heart
• Eliminates toxins
• Balances the endocrine glands
• Supplies the body with fresh blood, oxygen, and nutrients
• Increases ability to deal with stress
• Provides an overall sense of peace and well-being

The benefits of Bikram yoga will vary from person to person based on your history, your current physical or mental conditions, and what you put into your practice.

“Why the heat?”
Heat is the key to Bikram Yoga. Over time our muscles become as rigid and stiff as metal beams. Just like a blacksmith uses fire to soften metal, the heat makes our muscles more malleable, so that we can reshape them. The heat warms our muscles, preventing injury and allowing a deeper workout, and cleanses the body by flushing toxins. It also thins the blood to clear the circulatory system, increases the heart rate for a better cardiovascular workout, improves strength by putting muscle tissue in optimal state for reorganization, and reorganizes lipids (fat) in the muscular structure. The process is more effective and enjoyable when you come to class hydrated. Soon you’ll be asking us to turn up the heat!

“How much water should I drink?”
You should drink at least 64 ounces of water per day, or half your body weight in ounces, whichever is greater. At least two hours before class drink an extra 16 ounces of water. If you drink soda, coffee, or any beverage with caffeine or sugar, make sure you drink an equal amount of water to counter-balance the dehydrating effects.

“What if I'm not flexible?”
This common misconception often prevents people from coming to a yoga class. Yoga is not about how flexible you are. Instead, it’s about stretching your body and spine. The more inflexible you are, the more you need yoga. With a regular yoga practice, your flexibility will improve.
